Protecting Your Garage Door From Summer Weather in Bishop, GA
The Georgia summer is famous for its hospitality, but it can be notoriously “unfriendly” to your home’s exterior. For residents in Bishop, the combination of intense UV exposure, high humidity, and sudden afternoon thunderstorms creates a trifecta of stressors for your garage door system.
As a primary entry point and a major component of your home’s curb appeal, your garage door requires specific preventative care to survive the rising mercury. At Doors By Mike, we believe a little proactive maintenance in June can prevent a major repair in August. Here is how you can protect your investment this season.
1. Combatting Heat-Induced Expansion
In Bishop, summer temperatures often soar into the 90s, causing metal components to expand. Your garage door relies on a precise system of tracks, rollers, and springs to operate. When the metal tracks or the door panels themselves expand due to heat, it can lead to several operational issues:
- Misalignment: The door may begin to “rub” or “stick” as it moves through the tracks, leading to jerky movements.
- Increased Friction: Expansion puts extra strain on the garage door opener’s motor, potentially leading to a premature burnout.
- Noise: If you notice your door is suddenly screeching or grinding more than usual, it’s likely a sign that the heat has altered the fit of the hardware.
The Solution: Regular maintenance is vital. If your door is struggling to open or close smoothly due to the heat, it may require professional garage door repair to realign the tracks and ensure the safety sensors haven’t shifted out of place.
2. Managing the “Georgia Humidity”
Humidity levels in Oconee County can frequently hit 70% or higher during the summer months. For your garage door, moisture is a silent culprit of decay.
- Rust on Metal Doors: Steel doors, while durable, can develop surface rust if the protective finish is compromised. This is especially common at the bottom of the door where moisture and condensation sit.
- Warping of Wood Doors: If you have a classic wood garage door, humidity can cause the fibers to swell, leading to warping or rotting if the wood isn’t properly sealed.
The Solution: Inspect your door for any chips in the paint or finish. Applying a fresh coat of UV-resistant paint or a waterproof sealant acts as a shield against both the moisture and the sun’s rays. Additionally, keeping your garage ventilated can help reduce the internal humidity that stresses the door’s hardware.
3. Lubrication: The Lifeline of Your Door
High heat can cause standard grease to thin out and drip off your hardware, leaving your rollers and hinges unprotected. Without proper lubrication, the friction caused by thermal expansion will wear down your parts rapidly, leading to costly failures.
The Solution: If your door is showing signs of thinning grease and is in need of additional lubrication, click the book now button to have one of our technicians come by and get your door back in tip top shape. If your parts are already showing signs of heavy wear or rust, they may need to be replaced.
4. Check Your Weatherstripping
The rubber seal at the bottom of your door, the weatherstripping, isn’t just for keeping out the winter cold. In Bishop, its primary Summer job is to keep the humid air out and the (potentially) cooler air in.
- Heat Damage: Intense sun can cause the rubber to become brittle, crack, or even melt and stick to the driveway.
- Pest Barrier: Summer is prime time for Georgia pests. A cracked seal is an open invitation for insects and rodents looking for shade and a way into your home.
The Solution: Close your garage door and look for light peeking through the bottom or sides. If you see daylight, it’s time to replace the seal to maintain your home’s energy efficiency.
5. The Ultimate Summer Upgrade: Insulated Door Replacement
If your garage feels like an oven the moment you step into it, your garage door might be the culprit. Many standard doors are thin sheets of metal that act as giant radiators, transferring the sun’s heat directly into your home.
This is where an insulated door replacement becomes a game-changer for Bishop homeowners.
- Thermal Barrier: Quality insulation acts as a barrier, preventing radiant heat from baking the interior of your garage.
- Energy Efficiency: If your garage is attached to your home, a sweltering garage forces your AC to work harder to cool the adjacent rooms. An insulated door can lower the garage temperature by 10 to 20 degrees, noticeably reducing your monthly utility bills.
- Structural Integrity: Insulated doors are typically “sandwich” style, meaning they have two layers of steel with insulation in the middle. This makes them much more resistant to the warping and denting that can occur during extreme Georgia weather.
